Today, Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) involves information flows that are increasingly complex and made up of interconnected systems. The flows involve many actors including multiple suppliers and consumers.
Throughout, AIM must ensure:
The quality of the aeronautical information required by modern air navigation and ATC systems |
The efficiency and the cost effectiveness of the system |
Real time information |
In pursuit of these goals, AIM is moving from product-centric operations to data-centric operations.
One method of achieving this is to use a single data source. This source provides the information for all products. This means the products become more accurate and consistent as changes in the data automatically propagate through all products. This, in turn, allows AIS operations to become more efficient.
Therefore, the AIM data source is crucial. The aeronautical information stored in the data source must be modelled in accordance with aviation requirements. Static and temporary data must be managed seamlessly. Moreover, product creation tools must be able to inteface with the data source in order to create products.
The data must be capable of exchange between different systems. |
The Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) Specification supports the data-centric environment. It supports aeronautical information collection, dissemination and transformation throughout the data chain.
AIXM has two main components:
The AIXM Conceptual Model |
The AIXM XML Schema |
The AIXM Conceptual Model is a conceptual model of the aeronautical domain. It describes the features and their properties (attributes and associations) within the domain. Therefore, it can be used as the logical basis for AIM databases.

The AIXM XML Schema is an exchange model for aeronautical data. It is an implementation of the Conceptual Model as an XML (Extensible Markup Language) schema. Therefore, it can be used to send aeronautical information to others in the form of XML encoded data, enabling systems to exchange aeronautical information.

AIXM brings many benefits to the user, when moving from product-centric operations to data-centric operations.
