In order to create a standard Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM5) in Europe and USA, the Digital NOTAM project aimed at transforming standard aeronautic notes “Notes to Airman” (NOTAM) to a science technology language understood by computers, based on the general aeronautical model AIXM-XML.
Since airlines and other airport users in Europe needed accurate and easy to read/visualize information about the status of the runway contamination, for example with snow and ice in Winter operating conditions, the Digital SNOWTAM Project has developed advanced AIXM import/export tools, based on the AIXM 5.1 “Surface Contamination” model and using the latest market standard technologies. Data Users are now able to visualize their SNOWTAM Messages – automatically transferred, imported and converted from EAD – on a real world map, or translated in plain English, in a user friendly Web 2.0 Application. Moreover, whenever geographical data are available, the application is also able to draw airport surfaces for an even more accurate user experience. Data providers can use the Digital NOWTAM Data Provider Interface to edit and create new SNOWTAM proposals with a high level of graphical interactivity. The Application assures high data quality by validating the information before it is translated into ICAO SNOWTAM compliant format and AIXM 5.1 Timeslices. All the SNOWTAM and AIXM related data (features and contaminations) are made available to third parties software applications through a REST Interface in AIXM 5.1 XML.
