FAA Digital NOTAM Project |
Digital NOTAM will be the final step of the United States NOTAM System modernisation. The milestones in this process are indicated in the table below. The first step is to provide a single source of US NOTAMs leading to a single United States Federal NOTAM System. Afterwards, the United States will take steps to ensure all US NOTAMs follow ICAO NOTAM standards.

Computer interpretable (AIXM 5 encoded) NOTAMs are planned to be issued starting with 2010. It is expected that this will provide:
Better flight planning |
Assisted situation awareness |
Assisted navigation |

Digital NOTAM Submission Trial |
FAA is developing a Digital NOTAM System (concept demonstrator) combining an AIM database, charting, publishing and quality control functions. NOTAM originators at the airport will be provided system and user interfaces for digitally submitting candidate NOTAMs. Downstream, user interfaces and system interfaces will support digital NOTAM distribution.

Industry Requirements for Digital NOTAM Submission - August 29 2007 |
More than 110 participants from the FAA, airlines, airports and the aviation industry gathered at the Federal Aviation Administration to discuss plans for Digital NOTAM submission. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the Digital NOTAM concept and identify a working group to develop specifications for Digital NOTAM submission.
As part of the meeting EUROCONTROL and the FAA discussed the global strategy for Digital NOTAM with emphasis on joint FAA/EUROCONTROL cooperation. The FAA team demonstrated the proof of concept Digital NOTAM system. The participants also reviewed operational and technology issues that need to be addressed by the Industry/FAA working group for Digital NOTAMs.
