AMDB-Digital NOTAM Trial (2006) |
A "Study on the applicability of the Digital NOTAM concept for updating Airport Mapping Database (AMDB) applications" was performed by the Darmstadt University of Technology (Technische Universität Darmstadt, TUD) for EUROCONTROL, between September 2005 and April 2006.
In a cockpit simulation environment, the trial demonstrated that it is possible to automatically update an on-board electronic airport map with AIXM encoded NOTAM information. One of the main goals of the study was to test the temporality model of AIXM 5 and to identify the gaps between the current AIXM capabilities and airport mapping information requirements.
The study met the following objectives:
Identification of the necessary additional AIXM Conceptual Model features and properties in order to support AMDB data requirements, as stated in the EUROCAE document ED-99A |
Identification of the necessary additional AIXM Conceptual Model features' properties in order to support the encoding of aerodrome related NOTAM, for intelligent machine use |
Validation of the AIXM Conceptual Model temporal model
Demonstration of results in a flight simulator scenario. An existing airport moving map application used for taxi situation awareness was extended with the functionality to receive and decode AIXM messages announcing a temporary change and to depict them graphically as an integrated part of the map depiction. This functionality enables the pilot to get a more complete view of the aeronautical environment without the need to merge the “static” data used on his charts and within the onboard systems with the “dynamic” data available only in free text form in NOTAM. |

Procedures-Digital NOTAM Trial (2007) |
Considering the good results of the AMDB-Digital NOTAM Trial, a second study was requested by EUROCONTROL, this time focusing on the AIXM 5 proposed model for terminal procedures. It took place between August 2006 and June 2007.
In a cockpit simulation environment, the trial demonstrated that it is possible to automatically update an on-board display of an approach procedure with AIXM encoded NOTAM information which affects the procedure.
The study met the following objectives:
The draft Release Candidate 1 proposal for the AIXM5 Procedure Model has been investigated regarding applicability to real world scenarios and use cases, in particular with regard to temporary changes (digital NOTAM) |
The verified AIXM5 Procedure Model was implemented as a relational database schema and actual published procedure data has been stored in this database. The Report on the aspects related to the implementation of the AIXM 5 UML model in a relational database is one of the main achievements of this study |
An application that uses procedure data from the created database has been specified, designed and implemented. A public demonstration of this application has been given at the TUD research cockpit simulator facilities. The summary of this demonstration is available in the form of a movie, for on-line visualisation and download |
